How to Make a Wedding Cake

If you are already an accomplished baker, making a wedding cake is still a daunting task. If you are not an experienced baker, what are you thinking? Making a wedding cake is one of the most arduous baking projects ever.
Whatever your experience level, choose a very simple cake recipe for the wedding cake. A pound cake is one of the best cakes to use for weddings. Choose a good basic butter pound cake. After you have figured out how much cake you need, use an Internet recipe converter to change your recipe to fit your needs. Even if you are an experienced baker, you should try to make a wedding cake over three tiers. If you need more cake, make some simple sheets cakes to serve the guests. That will definitely bring down the stress level.
A delicious icing for a pound cake is a basic butter cream icing. This icing is very simple and fairly inexpensive. Don't even consider trying a more difficult icing. Who doesn't like a good butter cream icing?
A week or before the wedding, go ahead and make the cake layers and the sheet cakes you will need. Pound cake freezes very well. You can even freeze the layers while they are warm. Actually, wrapping warm pound cake in foil keeps the moisture inside the cake. On the day you plan to assemble the cake, make your icing and semi-thaw your cake. Icing a cold cake is very easy. After you have iced each layer, make sure that you smooth the icing on each layer so that the cake will look professional.
There are a few items that you should have purchased from a kitchen shop or cake shop. You need 3 different sized cake boards. Put the largest board on the cake plate. This becomes the base cake layer. Place the largest of the layers on the board.
You should have purchased some dowel rods to give the layers stability. Put the dowel rod into the cake and mark it so that you know where to cut it. Cut four dowels and place them into the cake. Then add the next sized cake board. Add the second layer and repeat the dowel routine. Add the top board and the top of the cake.
Use any extra icing to fix any problems you might have made during the cake assembly. If you are a good decorator, by all means add flowers, roses or rosettes, whatever you do best. If you are not able to decorate, by all means use some real flowers as decorations. Place a pretty cake topper on the cake and you are done.
Take your time as you learn how to make a wedding cake. Don't stress out. Take your time and your cake will become a huge success. It doesn't have to be perfect as long as it tastes good.
