How Much Cake for a Wedding

Wedding cakes are such an important part of a wedding reception. In fact a wedding cake can make or break a reception. Most brides spend quite a bit of time and trouble choosing the perfect frosting, filling, and cake. Then they spend countless hours deciding on decorations that will make their cake superior to all others they have ever seen. They look at every brides' magazine to find the latest trends and ideas for the perfect cake.

Even though the groom wants to taste the cake, he is much less absorbed in the cake than his fiance. He pretends to listen but mostly tunes her out until he goes to the tasting. Everyone loves a tasting. At this time the bride and groom get to taste all of the flavors that can be used for the wedding. The bride then describes what she wants her wedding cake to look like and the cake baker starts the design process. He draws the cake until he draws the cake until the baker has exactly what the bride wants down to the least detail.

When the bride makes the final choices for the wedding cake, she needs to take into consideration how many guests will be attending the reception. It is always better to over order cake than to take the chance at running out of cake. Nothing spells disaster like running out of cake before the last guest gets his slice. The wedding will seem skimpy no matter how much money is spent.

Most bakers have a price list for a simple cake and the number of guests the cake should serve. Depending on whether or not you use a star baker or the baker next door, these prices are very subjective. The more decorating or the more difficult the cake, the higher the price. The following guide is simply a guide to help you know how big your cake has to be for the number of people invited. Knowing how much cake for a wedding is the norm can help you choose the size cake you need.

Round Wedding Cake Price Estimates:

2 tier (6" & 8")
Serves 30 (8" tier only).............................$149.50

2 tier (6" & 10")
Serves 50 (10" tier only)............................$215.00

3 tier (6", 8" & 12")
Serves 100 (8" - 12" tiers only).....................$375.00

4 tier (6", 8", 10" & 14")
Serves 175 (8", 10" & 14" tiers only)................$625.00

5 tier (6", 8", 10", 14" & 18")
Serves 300 (8", 10", 14" & 18" tiers only).........$1,100.00

A wedding cake is hopefully a once in a lifetime cake so make sure yours is exactly what you want and the correct size for your guests. It's your day; have a cake fit for a princess.
