Home Made Wedding Cake

Let's face it; weddings are expensive, incredibly expensive. In fact, the average wedding costs over twenty thousand dollars. Wow! That's a lot of money. For all of those brides who don't want to break the bank for the wedding, there are many budget saving ideas that can make a wedding day special without going into debt. One of the most expensive items in a wedding is the wedding cake. Therefore, a home made wedding cake just might be a perfect way to have a great cake and not spend a fortune.
Making a home made wedding cake can be a family affair. Certainly the bride should not take on this job all by herself unless she really loves baking. Whoever makes the cake simply needs a plan, a schedule, and a few supplies. As soon as you offer to make the cake, you need to start on the plan. Talking to the bride about her colors and ideas is the first step. Depending on your decorating skills, you should help the bride to plan a cake that fits into your ability level. Even if you are not a skilled decorator, there are plenty of ways to make a home made wedding cake look as pretty as a bakery cake. Besides this home made wedding cake will be made with love.
Most bakers offer a tasting session so that the bride and groom can choose the type of cake they want. If you want, you can do this too, but it's a lot of trouble. Most people know what kind of cake they like anyway. You might offer vanilla pound cake, chocolate pound cake, red velvet cake, or carrot cake. These are very dense cakes which will hold up well for a wedding cake. They are all popular flavors so most anyone will be pleased with the cake. After the decision is made, you can find a recipe on the Internet that will make enough cake for all of the layers you need to make. If you have a recipe of your own, use one of the online recipe converters to change your recipe so that you will have enough cake for the reception.
The bride and groom will also choose a type of icing. Don't try anything too tough. Offer a cream cheese, chocolate, or butter cream icing. These go well with all of the cake choices and are very easy to make. They also hold up well even if the reception is held outside. When you are making the icing, make more than you think you will need so that you will have icing to cover mistakes or to use between layers.
Most home made wedding cakes are three layers. Any more layers than three may be too difficult to work with. Most any kitchen store offers wedding cake pans for a three layer cake. Each layer is a little larger than the next. Make the cake layers a few days ahead of time so that you won't have any problems. Icing a cool or cold cake is much easier than trying to bake and ice the cake the same day. That is a recipe for disaster. You could even bake and freeze the cake a week ahead of time.
If you are not a good cake decorator, visit a store that specializes in cake decorating tools and decorations. Most will have little sugar flowers, bells, and other cake decorations. You can buy a supply of these decorations and place them on the iced cake. These stores will also have lovely cake toppers to complete your home made wedding cake.
Remember the cake doesn't have to look perfect. A home made wedding cake doesn't have to look as if a professional baker made it. The love and time that went into the cake make the home made wedding cake the sensation of the reception. And best of all it will taste great too.
